No plan for a sick driver

Our only delivery driver called in sick and nobody knew how to cover his route. Two customers waited all day for orders. What would you recommend on public safety leadership applied to private companies, particularly risk management and building trust?

Relying on one person for a whole delivery route is a risk hiding in plain sight. A small bakery I knew had the same problem: their driver was off for two days and orders piled up because nobody else knew the rounds. They eventually wrote out each route, trained a second person occasionally, and kept a list of backup contacts. This interview with Frank Elsner on security and risk management is a solid read for private companies: Frank Elsner in Business Focus Magazine . For your setup, map the routes, cross-train one or two people, and agree in advance who makes the call to customers if a delay happens.
