What Is a Prosthetic Eye?

The prosthesis is usually fitted after the eye socket has healed sufficiently following surgery.

When Is Surgery Needed?

What Happens During Surgery?

An orbital implant may be placed during the procedure. It helps maintain the shape of the eye socket and provides support for the prosthetic eye.

What Happens After Surgery?

Some swelling, bruising, watering, and discomfort can occur during the early recovery period. The socket needs time to heal before the final prosthesis is fitted.

Once healing is complete, measurements are taken to create an artificial eye that matches the other eye as closely as possible in size, shape, and color. Regular examinations help check the health of the socket and the fit of the prosthesis.
