The case is probably that most that practice concealed carry either carry inside or outside their waistband on their dominant side.
Some, however, prefer to cross draw carry, also called shoulder carry. This carry method requires more discipline than IWB and OWB carry.
Here’s what you should know if you shoulder carry under your concealed carry jacket.
It is easier to draw safely and effectively from IWB and OWB carry than it is to draw from the non-dominant shoulder, as is the case with shoulder carry.
This is because all you need to do is lift the muzzle clear of the holster and rotate it to face the intended target.
With cross draw, you need to sweep the muzzle across when drawing, hence the name. The risk here is that you could unintentionally muzzle yourself or other targets on the way to the intended one.
This understandably produces a potential safety risk, as you must train carefully to ensure you do not muzzle yourself or anything else downrange you are unwilling to destroy as you draw.
The bottom line is that you will need to train deliberately in order to draw safely and effectively if you ultimately choose to practice shoulder carry.
One of the big advantages with shoulder carry is that you will be able to carry a larger gun. Full-size handguns and even the largest revolvers will be much easier to carry in a cross draw configuration.
This is a twofold effect. On one hand, you’ll have literally more clearance with a larger gun when it is under your shoulder on the non-dominant side.
The other effect is that shoulder holsters do a much better job of supporting the weight of a gun which is why you’ll be able to carry a heavier one.
When carried on the hip, a large gun not only can print, but it will drag down your belt on that side. You won’t have that issue with a shoulder holster which will do a much better job of distributing the weight of a larger gun.
If you’ve never shoulder carried before and are just considering it, you should also be aware that there are some positions from which it will be difficult if not impossible to draw, or at least to draw safely.
First, while it is more comfortable to shoulder carry in a seated position, it is also true that if you are ever pressed up against a wall, or laying flat on your chest on the ground, it will be nearly impossible to draw safely. That is not necessarily the case with other carry disciplines.
Though these are not by any means the only considerations to take if you’re thinking about shoulder carrying, they are some of the bigger ones.
That said, shoulder carry can still be a highly effective and comfortable way to carry a larger handgun, especially if you put in the time to train adequately.
You should also cover yourself with an appropriate concealed carry jacket that will help eliminate printing and keep you comfortable, too.
