Lithium iron phosphate, or LFP batteries, are only one class of lithium battery. Yet they are superior in many ways to other types of lithium batteries. Here are just a few of the advantages of lithium batteries sporting this chemistry.

  • One of the main selling points of lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry is its inherent stability. It is less likely to experience thermal runaway, not just during discharge at high temperatures but during charging, than other types of lithium batteries. Advanced LFP batteries are also protected by battery management systems that further boost safety.
  • Long life. Lithium batteries are renowned for their long life cycles as it is, but LFP batteries tend to last longer even than other types of lithium batteries.
  • One of the things that makes LFP batteries attractive is that they are relatively stable, even at high temperatures.
  • Fast charging. Compared to other lithium batteries, LFP batteries can take a charge very quickly. This makes them highly desirable when they are used to power trolling motors or small vehicles such as golf carts.
  • Low self discharge. Compared to other rechargeable batteries, LFP batteries exhibit very low self discharge, which can be as low as 1% per month.
  • Environmental friendliness. Other lithium batteries contain heavy metals like nickel and cobalt which can be toxic. Furthermore the mining of these minerals can be highly destructive to the environment.

And Why They’re Better Than Lead-Acid

It should go without saying that lithium batteries, not just LFP batteries, are better than lead-acid batteries in many ways. But if you needed a refresher, here are some ways that these lithium batteries outclass them.

  • No maintenance. Lead-acid batteries may need to be watered periodically, but LFP batteries will effectively never need any maintenance.
  • Low weight. LFP batteries, like pretty much all lithium batteries, have a high energy density which means that they are much lower in weight for their charge potential than lead-acid batteries.
  • Compact size. Also as a result of their high energy density, LFP batteries of a given capacity can be much more compact than comparable lead-acid batteries.
  • Long lifespan. Most of the time, lead-acid batteries will last a few hundred charge cycles at most. Most lithium batteries, especially LFP batteries, will last several thousand charge cycles, and will be more reliable at both high and low temperatures.
  • More reliable. High and low temperatures can badly affect the discharge potential of lead-acid batteries. Lithium batteries tend to be much more reliable by comparison.
  • Lithium batteries are highly regarded for their high discharge current, which makes them suitable for applications in which a lot of power is required, such as with small motors.
